1. Some are victims of the aftermath of war:
Siem Reap Countryside Cooking Class is located in an area of West of Siem Reap City, 11km from City center
along the National Road #6, Pass the Airport road keep straight. The area which was a major conflict
between Phnom Penh Government Soldiers and troops of the Khmer Rouge. Most of the young men of that time
(1979 - 98) were recruited on both sides of the civil war. Many children were left fatherless.
Also, until recently, the mortality rate among the women in childbirth was very high and many children were left
motherless. Adults often drifted to towns seeking menial work as a cleaners and laborers, but often the little
money and either died or didn't return to their village at all, leaving no support for their surviving family members.
3. The strict traditional nature of Cambodian Society
Cambodia is a very traditional society - in its values and in its regard for the customs
of marriage and the bringing up of children. According to custom, the parents approve
and choose partners for their children - and most young people follow this custom. If
the young people break this custom, their parents provide no support and often
disown the couple. Often it is the children who suffer, being left abandone.
1: Food ration for children - Nutrition:
Siem Reap Countryside Cooking Class provides three meals a day: Breakfast, Lunch, and
Dinner. Each meal we choose different ingredients such as fish, vegetable, eggs
pork, and beef in order to offer a balanced and nutricious diet to the children. We also provide a
dessert such as fruits, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins twice per week.
Siem Reap Countryside Cooking Class provide a safe and comfortable place for the children to sleep and spend
their free time. We have separated sleeping quarters for both the boys and girls. Also, we provide mosquitos,
nets, pillows, and blankets to be shared among the children.
Siem Reap Countryside Cooking Class provides four types of clothing to the children in care:
A). The traditional clothes: Provide 2 sets each year
=> during Khmer New Year &
=> Bun Phchum Ben ceremony.
B). The school uniform: the children starting school receive three sets of school uniforms per year.
C). Indoor ware and Pyjamas: 2 sets each year .
D). The working clothes: 2 sets of second hand or recycled clothing each year.
4. Unemployment and bank debt
About 85% of people living in the country are farmers - with no education and not enough land for cropping- and
there is very little alternative unemployment. Many get heavily into Bank. Often they seek refuge in a neighboring
country like Thailand. Once again, the children are either abandoned or left with ageing grandparents.
The Cooking Class has been established in this area to deal with some of these problems to assist these children
and their families. We try to supplement the minimum Government services needed and provide care, food,
shelter, and education for these very vulnerable children and we hope to give the
opportunities for them to become nurses, health workers, or teachers, so they can become partners in contributing
to and rebuilding the local communities. There is much work to be done. With your support, we can really make a difference.
4: Health Care and Sanitation:
All children are responsible for themselves, but an oftenly is control by our village chef.
Tooth paste and brushes are often donated but not enough we needed more help. When
children get sick, we send to the children hospital they Free treatment. For the children over
15 years old we usually is send to the clinic in the town that cost very expensive for us but the services is better
than Government's hospital.
All the children are educated at the state schools, now some of them
are moving tosecondary and high school at the town some children will finish
high school in 2016. Outside state school time table we provided with extra
curricular English instruction, Mathematics, Khmer literature, and provide many
skills training like sewing, computer, feeding, planting , and the traditional Khmer dance and music course are
given to them in order to teach and remember them the importance of Cambodia traditional and culture which
